Vol. 112 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Arbour Hill Plot.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will arrange to have the 1916 plot at Arbour Hill opened to the public by the removal of the boundary wall which keeps the graves of the patriots within the prison boundary.

Arrangements for the admission of the public to the 1916 Plot at Arbour Hill have already been made and the public now has free entry to the plot between the hours of 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. each day. In the circumstances the question of the removal of the boundary wall does not arise.

Is the Minister aware that some of the relatives of the executed men will not enter the prison grounds and they are of the opinion that the time has now arrived when the wall should be removed and the remains of the patriots taken outside the prison?

I think it is possible that the Deputy is speaking with information that is now slightly out of date. I was informed on behalf of a number of the relatives that they could not visit, or would not visit, the graves as long as permission was required from any governor or any military authority. Entry to the graves is now thrown wide open—no permit or permission is required—and I have received communications from the people I am referring to stating that they are quite satisfied with the present arrangements.
