Vol. 112 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Limerick Cottage Tenancy.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether Mr. Stephen Crowley, Cappamore, County Limerick, recently applied for the tenancy of a house (No. 10) in Cappamore, the property of the Limerick County Council; whether Mr. Crowley is a labourer, with a wife and seven children, of ages ranging from one to 17 years, males and females; whether he is living at present in a one-roomed house with floor area 10 feet x 9 feet, which is in a dilapidated condition; whether the previous tenant of No. 10 was Mr. Crowley's aunt; whether Mr. Crowley's application was supported by the parish priest and the local medical officer; whether notwithstanding this the tenancy of the cottage was given to another person, who, though married, had only one infant child, and was not a native of Cappamore but came from a neighbouring county; whether this was done on the recommendation of the county medical officer of health, and whether he will state fully to the Dáil the reasons why Mr. Crowley's application for the tenancy was rejected.

The allocation of labourers' cottages in County Limerick is a matter for the county council. In the selection of tenants in respect of which contributions to loan charges are claimed due regard must be had by the local authority to the scale of preferences laid down in the relevant regulations.

I am having further inquiries made in regard to the case referred to by the Deputy; but I understand that Mr. Crowley refused to accept the tenancy of another council house in Cappamore.
