Vol. 113 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pensioned Teachers.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Education if he has yet decided on the claims of pensioned teachers for an increase in their pensions; and, if so, whether he will state the proposed increases, and whether they will compare with those of pensioned teachers in the Six Counties and Great Britain.

As I stated in my reply to Deputy Rooney yesterday, the question of granting increases in the pensions paid to national teachers has been under urgent and sympathetic consideration by the Government for some time past. The delay in completing the review in this matter and announcing a decision arises from the fact that it is part of a general pension problem, and that it can only be decided in the light of the budgetary position for next year, which is at present under examination.

There was nothing about the budgetary position when the Minister made his promises.

Mr. Byrne

Am I to understand from the Minister that the 300 or 400 pensioned teachers with less than £2 a week — some of them get only £1 — will not get an increase until after the next budget statement?

They will not have to wait 16 years for it, anyway.

I do not think I can add anything to what I have already said. Action will take place in connection with this matter at the earliest possible moment. I am only answering the Deputy as best I can in the circumstances that concern the consideration and the decision of this matter.

Could the Minister indicate whether, when a decision is arrived at, it will have retrospective effect?

I do not think I could usefully add anything to what I have said.

The Minister could not have answered more evasively.
