Vol. 113 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ordnance Survey Technicians.

asked the Minister for Defence whether he has ascertained the cause of the lack of fully-trained Ordnance Survey technicians, as revealed by him in Dáil Éireann on 1st December, 1948 (Volume 113, columns 747-48), and what are his proposals in the matter.

asked the Minister for Defence if, in view of the dangerous lack of trained staff for the carrying out of mapping and survey work, as revealed in reply to questions in Dáil Éireann on the 1st December, 1948 (Volume 113, columns 747-48), and of the important nature of this work, whether military or civilian, he will state the steps he has taken to ensure that in future there will always be an adequate staff of fully-trained technicians.

With your permission, a Chinn Comhairle, I propose taking Questions Nos. 27 and 28 together.

The question raised by the Deputy is entirely a military one. We have a very small Army Survey Unit. The officer commanding this unit has recently undergone a military survey course in England, but both he and his unit lack practical experience of the particular aspect of military survey on which they are at present engaged.

Once our military survey personnel have completed the present task, they will have had sufficient experience to enable them to undertake similar duties in future.
