Vol. 113 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dismissals at Gypsum Industries.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that Gypsum Industries, Limited, have recently dismissed approximately 70 employees from their works in County Meath owing to the reduction in the intake of gypsum rock at the Drogheda cement factory; and, if so, whether he will take steps to ensure continuous employment in this industry.

I am informed that Gypsum and Bricks, Limited, Kingscourt, some weeks ago were obliged to dispense with the services of 32 men, owing, it is stated, to a falling off in the demand for gypsum rock. Three of the men have since been reemployed.

Although I am anxious that workers should as far as possible be kept in continuous employment, the Deputy will, I am sure, appreciate that for many reasons, over which I have no control, it is not possible for me to achieve what he has in mind.
