Vol. 114 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Allotment Schemes.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that allotment schemes are not in operation in Portmagee and Valentia Island; that those two areas have the largest number of landless men in Iveragh; and, if so, in view of the unsatisfactory conditions in the fishing industry, he will arrange for allotment schemes in these areas, where they would be a boon to the large number of families that are and have been dependent on the fishing industry.

To benefit under the Acquisition of Land (Allotments) (Amendment) Act, 1934, an allotment scheme for unemployed persons in towns without municipal government must be operated through an approved allotments association. If, therefore, such associations are formed in the areas mentioned by the Deputy, my Department will give all possible assistance to ensure the success of the schemes. To qualify for recognition under the Act the association is required to provide, at its own expense, suitable land which must be approved by my Department and capable of accommodating the majority of the plots on one site.
