Vol. 114 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Arterial Drainage.

Mr. Maguire

asked the Minister for Finance, now that machinery for the carrying out of the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945, is available, if he will give priority to districts where the population per acre is high as in the old congested areas where the conditions of farms through flooding are bad, rather than to districts where the area of lands likely to be improved is large and less densely populated.

There are many factors which have to be taken into account in the selection of areas for priority of treatment under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945, and the relative size of the holdings and density of population are considerations to which due weight is given.

Mr. Maguire

Am I to assume from the reply that priority will be given on the basis of density of population with reference to the number of people per acre, without regard to the quality of the land improved?

I can assure the Deputy that such is the case, and a good example is the Corrib, which is now under survey.
