Vol. 114 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dredging of Dún Laoghaire Harbour.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state when the harbour at Dún Laoghaire was last dredged; whether in existing conditions the depth of water in the harbour would be adequate for the berthing of the new cross-Channel vessels which it is proposed to bring into service between Holyhead and Dún Laoghaire, and how often during the past 12 months the entire harbour has been surveyed.

Dredging was last done in Dún Laoghaire harbour in February and March, 1938.

In view of the proposal to put new mail boats into service this year on the Dún Laoghaire-Holyhead run, a soundings survey was made in November, 1948, which showed that there is adequate depth of water to accommodate the new vessels.

With regard to the last part of the question, I would refer the Deputy to the answer which I gave to a similar question on this subject on 15th June, 1948.

The Parliamentary Secretary stated in his answer on that date that the harbour was under constant survey. Is he aware that exhaustive inquiries have failed to show that the harbour is under constant survey? If it is under constant survey, is the survey carried on during the hours of darkness?

My reply to the Deputy at that time, on his supplementary question, was that it is constantly under review.

No, survey.
