Vol. 114 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bar Iron.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that no bar iron suitable for making horsehoes, wheelbands, etc., has been available in Cork for some time; and, if so, whether he will ensure that supplies will be made available to Cork blacksmiths without delay.

I am aware that within the past week or so there have been isolated and temporary shortages of the bar iron referred to. Irish Steel Holdings, Limited, Haulbowline, have now met these demands and supplies of a full range of flat bars will be available shortly.

Does the Minister not know very well that that statement is not true? I have been in communication with Irish Steel Holdings, Limited, this week and they have told me that they would start the rolling of flat bars at the end of this month. I would ask the Minister to verify that statement.

I can assure the Deputy that the answer which I have given is not untrue.

Will the Minister inquire into what I have said and correct his statement accordingly?

Let me repeat the reply, and I think the Deputy will agree that there is no inconsistency.

"I am aware that within the past week or so there have been isolated and temporary shortages of the bar iron referred to. Irish Steel Holdings, Limited, Haulbowline, have now met these demands and supplies of a full range of flat bars will be available shortly."

That is the information I have, and I have no reason to question it.

Such is not the case. It has not been available in Cork City for several months.

If the Deputy will give me detailed particulars, and the names of persons, of the shortages I will undertake to have the matter investigated.

I gave them to Irish Steel Holdings, Limited, this week.
