Vol. 114 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rates on Agricultural Land.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that increasing rates are becoming an unbearable burden on the farming community; and if he will take steps to introduce proposals for legislation to derate agricultural land or to stabilise rates at a reasonable level.

Mr. Murphy

The extent of the relief from rates to be accorded to agricultural land is a question which is debated annually in connection with the Vote for Supplementary Agricultural Grants. The matter also came up for consideration in the last Session of the Dáil in connection with the Relief of Rates on Agricultural Land Act, 1948.

I note that a motion on the matter in the joint names of the Deputy and Deputy O'Reilly is also tabled for discussion.

In these circumstances I do not think it would serve any useful purpose to discuss the question further by way of Parliamentary question and reply.
