Vol. 114 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Midwives' Car Expenses.

asked the Minister for Health whether he is aware that district midwives, unlike other district nurses, are not allowed expenses for the use of motor cars; and, if so, whether he will authorise the payment of such expenses.

I am aware that midwives employed by public assistance authorities are not entitled to be paid travelling expenses. Unlike public health nurses they are part-time officers and engage in private practice.

Under the proposed extension of the health services additional duties will devolve upon the midwives. Their terms and conditions of service will consequently require revision and the payment of travelling expenses to them will then be considered.

Am I to assume that the State proposes to make similar provision in the case of dispensary doctors for extra duties under the health services?

That is a separate question.

It is a separate question, but it is under consideration.
