Vol. 114 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Bus Services.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the amount of the surplus of income over expenditure of the Dublin City bus services for each of the years 1944 to 1948, inclusive.

Total receipts for the Dublin City and suburban bus services operated by Córas Iompair Éireann and by the Great Northern Railway in each of the years 1944 to 1948 were, respectively, £1,165,657; £1,257,339; £1,336,350; £1,164,937 and £1,504,312.

The figures of expenditure compiled by the companies relate to all their bus services, and as it is not possible to segregate the figures for the city services, the surplus of income over expenditure on those services cannot be ascertained.

If the company does not segregate the figures for expenditure in respect of bus services in Dublin, how were they aware of the position in regard to the bus services at the moment and what will be the recoupment through the increase in fares?

They are aware, of course, of the income. My information, however, is that they cannot segregate expenditure and that, therefore, they cannot give me a definite and segregated figure for the expenditure on the city bus services as against other services.

Does the Minister accept the excuse from Córas Iompair Éireann that they cannot give that information, which ought to be readily available?

I am informed not only by Córas Iompair Éireann but by the Great Northern Railway that it is not possible for them to give the information which would accurately represent the expenditure on the city bus services.

No wonder it is bankrupt.

If they had to prepare statistics like that they would be bankrupt long ago.
