Vol. 114 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fermoy Flooding.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state whether he is prepared to accept financial responsibility for the removal of portion of the islands in Fermoy and of the weir which, according to Cork County engineering staff, will obviate an appreciable amount of the flooding in Fermoy which for some years past has caused great financial loss to a number of its residents.

As the Deputy will appreciate, I am not yet in a position to give a decision in regard to any particular scheme under the Local Authorities (Works) Bill, 1949, which has only passed its Second Reading Stage. I have invited local authorities to submit proposals for schemes in anticipation of the Bill passing into law and it is open to the local authority to submit the Fermoy proposal. I presume that the proposal referred to in the Deputy's question will be among those to be submitted by the Cork County Council, and if so I will, of course, give the matter my personal and sympathetic consideration.
