Vol. 117 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Tipperary Slate Quarry Dispute.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that there is a labour dispute at Portroe slate quarry, County Tipperary; and, if so, what steps, if any, he intends to take with a view to a satisfactory settlement of the dispute.

I am aware that there is a strike at the Portroe slate quarry of the Killaloe Slate Quarry Company, Limited, but, in accordance with the provisions of the Industrial Relations Act, 1946, the settlement of such disputes is a matter for the Labour Court.

The Minister is aware that the Labour Court has already interfered and, as the prospects of a settlement are not too bright at the moment, will he consider the matter again?

I am aware that the Labour Court considered an application for an increase of wages from persons employed by this company; that they made an award and that the company refused to implement the award made by the Labour Court. I am aware that there is a strike on there at the moment and, so far as I am informed, neither of the parties to the strike has approached the Labour Court in connection with the strike.
