Vol. 117 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Condition of Canal at Athlone.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that the canal which flows through the Connaught side of Athlone is in a very dangerous condition and is, in effect, an open sewer, that it constitutes a serious danger to the health of the people; and, if so, whether he is prepared to take immediate steps to have the matter remedied.

This is a matter for the sanitary authority in the first instance. I understand that sewerage effluent is at present discharged into the canal and that the urban district council are preparing to lay a sewer which will take this effluent.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary make inquiries in the Department as to whether plans were submitted 12 years ago to the Department for the laying of a main sewer through this canal in view of the fact that the sewerage from a factory, five terraces of houses and a village flow through this canal in an open sewer?
