Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Retired Civil Servants.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state (a) the number of civil servants serving at the date of the Treaty, who retired under Article 10 and were on 31st March, 1949, in receipt of pensions paid by the British Treasury; (b) the cost-of-living figure used in assessing the final monthly payments for the year ended on that date; (c) the number of civil servants who retired under the 1929 Act, with compensation under Article 10 who were on 31st March, 1949, in receipt of pensions paid by the Irish Government; and (d) the lowest and highest cost-of-living figures utilised in assessing the latter pensions.

The particulars requested by the Deputy are as follows:—

(a) The number of civil servants serving at the date of the Treaty who were on 31st March, 1949, in receipt of compensation under Article 10 of the Treaty, part of which is repaid by the British Government under paragraph 13 of the agreement scheduled to the Civil Service (Transferred Officers) Compensation Act, 1929, was 671.

(b) The final monthly payments for the year ended on 31st March, 1949, were assessed by reference to a cost-of-living figure of 320.

(c) The number of former civil servants who were on the 31st March, 1949, in receipt of compensation under Article 10 of the Treaty paid entirely by the Irish Government was 160.

(d) The lowest and highest cost-of-living figures used in assessing compensation in the latter cases were 150 and 180 respectively.
