Vol. 119 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Museum Stamp Collection.

asked the Minister for Education whether he is aware that the stamp collection in the National Museum is not displayed to the best advantage; and, if so, whether he will take steps to provide better facilities for the display and also to improve the conditions for the preservation of the stamps.

It is not possible, as things have been for a number of years, to find a really suitable place in the National Museum for the proper display and exhibition of the stamp collection. This is mainly due to the very crowded condition of the building generally, and investigations are in progress as to the possibility of making additional space available by a judicious system of storage and rearrangement.

I am not aware that improvement is needed in the conditions necessary for the adequate preservation of the stamps. Every precaution is taken to guard them against damage by light and the gallery in which they are placed is as damp-free as possible. The unexhibited stamps are filed in a steel cabinet where the risk of deterioration is practically negligible.

I have asked that any additional precautions that may be considered of advantage be taken.
