Vol. 119 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Valuation of Rehabilitated Land.

asked the Minister for Finance if, in view of a newspaper report that farmers are holding back from the land rehabilitation project through fear that, when improvements are carried out, the valuation of the improved farm will be raised, he will give an assurance, to be implemented if necessary by the introduction of proposals for legislation, that valuations in such cases will not be increased.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he will take steps, if necessary, by the introduction of proposals for legislation, to ensure that persons who avail of the land rehabilitation project will not have their land valuations increased as a result of any improvement that may be effected by the project.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 41 and 42 together.

Farmers can rest assured that their land valuations will not be increased as a result of improvements under the land rehabilitation project of the Department of Agriculture since, under existing law, valuation of land cannot be altered at the annual revision of valuations. The necessity for legislation as suggested by the Deputies does not, therefore, arise.

Is the Minister aware that a similar announcement was made by the Taoiseach some time ago and that, despite that, rumours have been spread around the country by the Party opposite?

Hear, hear. As busy as bees.
