Vol. 119 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Revenue from Motor Taxes.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the amount of revenue collected during 1949 in (1) registration duty on motor vehicles, (2) drivers' licences, (3) petrol tax, and (4) taxes on imported motor vehicles and parts.

In the calendar year 1949, receipts from Road Fund licences and miscellaneous fees were £2,380,239 and from driving licences, £92,462. Receipts from the duty on petrol, which are not separately recorded (being included under mineral hydrocarbon light oils), have been estimated at £3,000,000. The net receipt from the duty on motor vehicles and parts imported in 1949 was £922,088.

Would the Minister consider the desirability of having the entire revenue collected from these taxes utilised for the maintenance and construction of roads?

In that case, I would have to devote the whole of the revenue from the whiskey duty to putting up new public houses.
