Vol. 119 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rural Electrification.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state when it is intended to continue the rural electrification scheme in the parish of Tyholland, Monaghan.

I have been informed by the Electricity Supply Board that a committee was appointed by local interests early last year in connection with the preparation of a rural electrification scheme and that the board advised the committee to prepare and submit a memorial signed by the residents who are anxious to take supply. I understand the memorial has not yet been submitted.

May I ask is it not the duty of the Electricity Supply Board authorities themselves to inquire into the requirements of the people of the district instead of leaving the work to a local committee?

I am afraid if it is to be left entirely to the officials of the Electricity Supply Board, limited in number as they are, that rural electrification may not go ahead as rapidly as we should like. May I suggest that if the local people are interested in getting a supply they should make some move themselves in the matter?
