Vol. 119 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wage-Freezing Orders.

asked the Taoiseach whether he is aware that the Tánaiste is reported in a newspaper of the 14th March, 1950, to have stated that the Government had abolished the wage-freezing Orders imposed by Fianna Fáil, and if he will state (a) the date on which Orders under the Emergency Powers Act relating to wage regulations during the emergency ceased to have effect, and (b) the titles, purposes and dates of repeal of the Orders to which the Tánaiste referred.

I am aware that the Tánaiste has been reported as having made a statement to the effect indicated in the Deputy's question. The report was, however, incorrect: the Tánaiste did not say that the Government had abolished the previous Government's wage-freezing Orders, but that the present Government have not followed the policy represented by those Orders.

As to the second part of the question, the Emergency Powers (No. 260) Order, 1943, which provided for the restriction of increases in remuneration, and the several Orders amending that Order, were revoked by the Emergency Powers Orders (Revocation) Order, 1946, which came into operation on the 23rd September, 1946.
