Vol. 119 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sales of Turf.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the total amount of semi-automatic machine-won turf of the 1949 crop for which a market has been found, specifying the amount sold for use by State Departments, local authority institutions, manufacturing concerns, and private persons; and if he will further state the average price per ton obtained, and the amount unsold.

I am informed by Board na Móna that the 1949 production of turf by semi-automatic machines was bulked with the carry-over from 1948. The carry-over from 1948 season was approximately 49,200 tons and the production in the 1949 season approximately 101,000 tons. Sales in the period 1st April, 1949, to 16th February, 1950, amounted to 67,200 tons. As Bord na Móna's sales are in the main to fuel merchants and haulage contractors, it is not possible to give the information as to sales for use by State Departments, local authority institutions, manufacturing concerns and private persons. The average price obtained was 39/2 per ton loaded at bog and the quantity of turf remaining unsold at 16th February, 1950, is estimated at 83,000 tons.
