Vol. 119 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Graded Rents for County Dublin Houses.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will direct that the proposed scheme of graded rents for Dublin County Council houses should be implemented immediately so far as the lower income groups are concerned, so as to alleviate the hardship now being caused to tenants with low incomes who are required to pay rents of 15/- per week.

I understand that provisional rents of 15/- per week, inclusive of rates, have been fixed by the county council for about 300 new cottages recently completed. It is the intention of the council to introduce a scheme of graded rents for these and other cottages, which will result in the adjustment of this rent in accordance with the ability of tenants to pay.

I have approved in principle of proposals for the appointment of additional staff to implement the council's scheme, and it is now a matter for the local authority to decide when it can be brought into operation.
