Vol. 120 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Reclamation Project.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state the number of applications so far received under the land reclamation scheme (a) from those who signified their intention to undertake the work themselves; and (b) from those who expressed a wish that the work should be undertaken by his Department; the number of approvals issued under both these heads; the number completed under these heads; the amount of money so far expended on the scheme excluding administrative costs; and the number of applicants who expressed the wish to have their contributions under (b) consolidated with their annuity.

The total number of applications under the land rehabilitation project up to the 15th April, is 36, 340.

It is only at the stage of first inspection that information becomes available as to whether the applicant desires to do the work himself or that it should be undertaken by the Department. The total number of first inspections is 14,580. Of this number, 12,155 have signified their intention to do the work themselves, and approvals have been issued in 9,294 cases. Tentative agreement on proposals has been reached in 62 cases out of 2,425 in which applicants have asked the Department to undertake the work.

As indicated in a reply to a question by Deputy Cogan on 19th instant, the number of applicants who had received cash grants for work completed was 213, involving £2,891. As at 8th April, 8,738 applicants had been approved involving cash grants for work now proceeding, or to be proceeded with, to the value of £193,780.

It can be taken that about 90 per cent. of those applicants who require the work to be done by the Department will ask to have their contributions paid by way of annuity.

The total amount of money expended to date, excluding administrative expenses, is £143,165.
