Vol. 121 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Married Officers' Allowances.

asked the Minister for Defence whether, in view of the hardship on officers in the Reserve who, though married, are disallowed lodging, fuel and light allowance under paragraph 33 (b), Defence Force Regulations R/1, and in view of the small additional cost to the Exchequer, he will devise means by which such married officers will be eligible for lodging, fuel and light allowance.

Since the 1st April, 1950, lodging, fuel and light allowance has been discontinued and single and married scales of pay introduced in lieu for all officers of the Defence Forces. The new regulation governing the pay of officers of the Reserve of Officers, First Line, however, still provides that an officer of the Reserve of Officers, First Line, must, in order to qualify for the married scale of pay, have completed a minimum total of two years' full-time paid service, made up of periods of permanent service, annual training, etc.

I do not regard the service requirement of two years as unreasonable. There are conditions of a similar character for officers of the Permanent Force. I do not propose therefore to abolish the service requirement for married scales of pay for officers of the Reserve of Officers, First Line, or to reduce the period of two years at present prescribed. I am not aware of any cases of hardship arising out of the present regulations.
