Vol. 122 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Schools Condemned as Unfit.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the number of schools condemned as unfit for human habitation in the past ten years by medical officers of health and in respect of which medical reports are available.

Between 700 and 1,000 reports by medical officers on school premises are transmitted annually to my Department by the Department of Health.

It is the practice to examine these reports on receipt, and to give attention to those cases in which schools are stated to be unsuitable or in which very serious defects are mentioned. Because of the large number of reports involved, and difficulties as regards making available the staff required to deal with the matter, it would be virtually impossible to obtain from the official records the information asked for by the Deputy.

The Deputy can be assured, however, that, as I mentioned above, action is at all times taken on reports the nature of which calls for serious attention. In a considerable number of cases where schools were reported in the last ten years as unsuitable the old buildings have been replaced, or are in course of replacement, by new schools, and in the other cases the fabrics have been found to be capable of being reconstructed and improved. In the remaining cases concerned, action is proceeding with the object of either replacing the unsuitable building or rendering it suitable by way of reconstruction or improvement.
