Vol. 122 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Use of Diesel Motors.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state if it his intention to recommend to Córas Iompair Éireann that Diesel motors should be introduced in the near future in view of the desirability of improving and increasing the frequency of the suburban rail services.

Córas Iompair Éireann is required by the Transport Act, 1950, to provide an efficient, economical and properly integrated system of public transport for passengers and merchandise by rail, road and water. It must be assumed that the board, in fulfilling its statutory obligations, will give due consideration to the question of motive power for rail services. In comparing the merits of alternative forms of motive power, there are many considerations of a highly technical and complex character involved; it is the responsibility of the board to weigh the various factors and I have no function in the matter.
