Vol. 122 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork Water Schemes.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the cause of the delay in carrying out the proposed new water scheme at Bartlemy, County Cork.

This scheme has been approved and a contract has been entered into by the sanitary authority. I understand that the delay in commencing the work is due to difficulty in obtaining delivery of water pipes.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the present position in regard to the water scheme at Coole-Bawnard, Francistown, Grange, and Ballyhampshire, in the rural area of Fermoy, County Cork.

Preliminary proposals for a water supply to Coole, Grange, and Ballyhamsherry have been submitted recently by the local authority. As this scheme was not included in the programme of urgent sanitation works adopted by the county council in May, 1948, inquiries are being made as to the reasons for proposing to undertake it while a considerable part of that programme remains to be carried out.

The Minister would hardly be aware of it, but consideration was first given to this scheme as far back as 1913; subsequently it was considered in the year 1933. May I respectfully suggest that there are at least 20 cottiers and nearly as many farmers in that area without water? I would appeal to the Minister to do his best to expedite the delivery of a water supply to this area.

I regret the delay, but the Deputy will appreciate that it was not included by the county council in their project of works submitted in May, 1948. I will have further inquiries made in the matter and see if anything can be done.
