Vol. 122 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Building Materials.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether, in view of the recent deterioration in the international situation and of the fact that it may be impossible to import building materials and requisites which are not manufactured here, he will have examined by the Industrial Development Authority the possibility of setting up a non-profit-making board, company or authority charged with the responsibility of accumulating building materials sufficient to enable the building programme to be continued in the event of a return of emergency conditions.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he has requested the Industrial Development Authority to have carried out a survey of the building industry with a view to ascertaining what building materials and requisites not manufactured or produced here at present could, in fact, be so manufactured, processed or produced; and, if so, with what result.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 16 and 17 together.

One of the main functions of the Industrial Development Authority is to survey the possibilities of further industrial development. The authority is engaged in a general survey of the whole industrial field, including building materials and requisites, and has before it certain proposals for the manufacture of such commodities.

The question of setting up a special organisation for the purpose of accumulating building materials against the return of emergency conditions is only one aspect of a general problem that would have to be dealt with in the circumstances envisaged by the Deputy.

Can the Minister give the House an assurance that, in the event of the return of emergency conditions, arrangements will be made to enable the building programme to be proceeded with?

The Deputy can take it that every aspect of the matter is being considered and every precaution that can be taken is and will be taken in the matter.

Can I take it from the Minister that the recent deterioration in the international situation is being taken into account in the examination of the problem?

The Deputy can appreciate that that has not escaped us.

If I might further ask——

Question No. 18.
