Vol. 122 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Electricity for Isolated Farms.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that isolated farmhouses are not being catered for under the rural electrification scheme and can get a supply of current from the Electricity Supply Board only by the construction of additional lines for which exorbitant ground rents must be paid by the farmer, as in the Causeway district, and whether he will take steps to bring such cases within the rural electrification scheme and in particular reinvestigate the case of Mr. Michael Barry of Clashmealcon, Causeway.

I am informed by the Electricity Supply Board that in the case of isolated dwellings an increased fixed charge is quoted sufficient to ensure that the economic return on providing supply is equivalent to the economic return obtained generally under the rural electrification scheme. I am not prepared to ask the board to alter the financial basis of the scheme in the manner suggested.

The responsibility for the action taken in individual cases rests with the board and I suggest that the Deputy should address his representations directly to the board about the case to which he refers.
