asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that by reason of the condition of a canal bridge at Pulla, Offaly, the people of the area, who are dependent on turf-cutting for a livelihood, have been unable to obtain transport for the removal of turf from the area; and, if so, whether he will state how this situation will be remedied.
- Repair of Canal Bridge.
With your permission, a Chinn Chomhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 84 and 85 together.
I am not aware that no passable road is provided for residents in the area reffered to. The decision as to the road works to be carried out in the county in any year is one for the Offaly County Council.
I understand that the large-scale drainage operations which are being carried out by the Office of Public Works in the Brosna catchment area are expected to remove the flooding conditions in Pullough.
The weight restrictions on the use of the canal bridge are not solely due to the condition of the bridge but also for the protection of the canal bank by which the bridge is approached. This presents a special problem which I understand is being examined by the county council in consultation with Córas Iompair Éireann.
Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that in Pulla, whatever may be done in connection with the Brosna, no one can safely walk around without wearing rubber boots?
I am informed by the Office of Public Works that the work being done on the Brosna will alleviate that position.
