Vol. 123 No. 14

- Local Authorities (Works) Act.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether schemes under the Local Authorities (Works) Act were submitted by the Castlebar and Westport Urban District Council; whether these schemes have been approved; and, if so, why work has not commenced on the projects.

In the current financial year the Castlebar Urban District Council submitted three schemes under the Local Authorities (Works) Act, 1949. Two of these works have been approved and the appropriate grant notified. A third scheme submitted was not considered suitable and was not approved.

The Westport Urban District Council submitted four schemes. One of these has been approved and the appropriate grant allocated. Further information from the local authority is required in the case of another scheme and the remaining two proposals were not considered suitable and were not approved.

The question of the timing of the execution of works under the Act is one for the local authorities concerned.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that serious flooding is caused at the Newtown-Blackforth houses, Castlebar, due to the failure to maintain a stream flowing through the area; whether a scheme has been submitted to have this stream dealt with under the Local Authorities (Works) Act; and, if so, why work has not commenced on the project.

The Deputy is presumably referring to a proposal submitted by the Castlebar Urban District Council in 1949-50 for work on a stream which flows through the area. The proposal included work which was not for relief or protection from flooding and did not come within the terms of the Act. The council were advised that a modified scheme dealing solely with flooding would be considered. No such scheme has been submitted.
