Vol. 124 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Commission on Emigration.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he is yet in a position to indicate when the report of the Commission on Emigration will be available.

I am informed by the commission that the drafting of the report has been completed and that the report is being examined. The commission have intimated to me that they cannot yet say when they will be in a position to furnish me with their report, but that all possible steps are being taken to expedite it.

Will the Minister be good enough to inform the Dáil when this commission was appointed?

I would say, offhand, about April, 1948. It has been functioning for a substantially lesser period than many of the commissions appointed by the Deputy, one of which has not yet reported.

Is it a fact that the Minister for Industry and Commerce stated in the year 1948 that if his Party were returned as a majority they would solve this question overnight— and that was three years ago?

That was said in 1932 by somebody else.
