Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Butter Exports and Imports.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state (a) the quantity of butter imported in 1950-51, and (b) the countries from which it was imported, giving the price per hundredweight paid and the quantity secured in the case of each country.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state (a) the quantity of creamery butter produced in each of the months November and December, 1950, and January, 1951, with the corresponding figures for 1949-50; (b) the amount of home-produced creamery butter in cold store at the 31st January, 1950 and 1951; (c) how much butter he expects to import to enable him to maintain the present consumption in the State; (d) from what countries he is importing butter at present, the quantities from each and the price per hundredweight delivered at Dublin, and (e) the price per hundredweight our own creameries are getting at present, free on rail at nearest station.

I propose, a Chinn Chomhairle, with your permission to take Questions Nos. 51 and 53 together and, as the reply is in the form of a tabular statement, to have the answer circulated in the Official Reports.

(c) The quantities, if any, of butter which might need to be imported from time to time to permit of consumption of butter being maintained at its present level will depend on the quantities of butter manufactured by creameries.

(e) The maximum wholesale prices at which creamery butter may be sold by creameries at present are set out in the Creamery Butter and Butter Boxes Order, 1947 (S.R. & O. 1947, No. 157) and the Roll Butter Order, 1947 (S.R. & O., 1947, No. 156) as amended by the Roll Butter Order, 1947 (Amendment) Order, 1950 (S.I. No. 131 of 1950).

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state the date in 1950 on which Irish creamery butter was exported to Great Britain, Germany, France, Malta, Morocco and British West Indies.

Irish creamery butter was exported to Germany on 20th and 24th March, 1950, 15th September, 1950, 10th October, 1950 and 6th and 10th November, 1950, and to France on 1st November, 1950.

As far as I am aware, there were no commercial exports of creamery butter in 1950 to Great Britain, Malta, Morocco or British West Indies.
