Vol. 124 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Military Service Medals.

asked the Minister for Defence whether, in view of the large number of applicants who were late in applying for military service medals, he will consider the desirability of extending the time within which such applications may be made, if necessary, by the introduction of proposals for legislation.

I do not propose to introduce legislation for the extension of the time limit for applications for military service medals.

Would the Minister consider extending the date to the 1st June for the termination of the time in which a person can apply for military service medal?

The date for applying for these medals has been extended frequently. It was extended some time ago by legislation. Since then a multiplicity of advertisements has appeared in the daily papers and in the provincial papers. We made a special arrangement also with Radio Éireann for multiple announcements calling people's attention to the closing date. There must be an end to everything some time.

I am suggesting the 1st June next.

I have heard the Deputy's suggestion and I do not think the extension is required.
