Vol. 124 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rural Electrification in Gaeltacht.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether the Electricity Supply Board are considering the question of extending rural electrification to Gaeltacht areas at such a reduced rate of charge and under such conditions as will enable the householders in these areas to avail themselves of the scheme.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply given in Dáil Éireann on 6th July, 1950, to a question on this subject to which I have nothing to add.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary say if any proposals have been put up to the Electricity Supply Board with a view to having this rural electrification scheme extended to the Gaeltacht?

Some of the Gaeltacht areas have already been connected and, as the Deputy knows, the rural electrification scheme operates on the basis of the highest return likely to be obtained in the different localities throughout the country.

Is it not a fact that the Parliamentary Secretary has ignored part of the question, then, because I asked him if the electricity supply scheme could be extended to the Gaeltacht at such a rate and under such conditions as would enable the people there to pay for it?

I think if the Deputy consults the reply to the earlier question he will get a reply to that. I would refer him to the reply on the 6th July, 1950.

Would this not be a much better idea than trying to level mountains and to throw rocks into the sea?
