Vol. 124 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Turf Supplies.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will take steps to ensure for the protection of the public that all turf sold shall be in reasonably dry condition, and if he has considered the possibility of providing (1) roofed storage accommodation; (2) sale of turf by measure rather than weight, and (3) the fixing of maximum moisture standards.

The best protection of the consuming public is to refuse to accept wet turf. In view of the fact that it is not at present proposed to store turf in dumps the question of the provision of roofed storage accommodation does not arise. There is no legal restriction on the sale of turf by measure rather than by weight; either method can be adopted by agreement between buyer and seller. In view of the first part of my reply, the fixing of maximum moisture standards does not arise.
