Vol. 126 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Telephone Kiosk for Spangle Hill (Cork).

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will consider the advisability of erecting a telephone kiosk in the Spangle Hill district of Cork City.

I am having the question of erecting a telephone kiosk at Spangle Hill examined.

Is the Minister aware that Deputy Lynch asked a question with regard to this area some time ago and he was told by the Minister's predecessor that the matter was being examined? Has he got any result of the examination since that question was asked?

I am not aware that a question was asked previously and I will have to make further investigation. I have been told by the officers of the Department, however, that a telephone kiosk established in a somewhat similar place where there was a new housing scheme, Gurranebraher, never paid its way. Perhaps if the citizens would commence to use the telephone, we might be able to consider the matter further.

The Minister is aware that there is very often urgent need for telephone facilities in remote districts—for getting in touch with doctor, priest or fire brigade—and that a telephone need not always necessarily have to pay its way?

Could the Minister say whether the telephone kiosk that has not paid is the telephone kiosk outside Deputy McGrath's house?

I would like the Minister to consider the fact that about 400 houses are being built where that telephone is asked for.

Now that I am informed that this question was asked before and the same answer given I undertake to have the matter further examined to see whether there was sufficient examination of the question.

I hope that the same considerations will not weigh with you.
