Vol. 126 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Afforestation.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will indicate whether the Land Commission have considered the propriety of acquiring portion of the lands of Corrin, Ballynoe and Cullinagh in the rural area of Fermoy which have been offered for sale to his Department for forestry purposes; and if so, if he will state the reason for the delay in purchasing these lands as they have been on offer to his Department since 1943 or 1944.

The acquisition of lands on offer in this area was considered by the Forestry Division of my Department. Negotiations were opened for the purchase of the key centre of 93 acres and agreement was reached as to price. The owner has not shown title, however, and further progress cannot be made at present.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will indicate the forestry plans for West Cork in the present year.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply of 11th April last to a similar question. Since that date 1,014 acres have been acquired for afforestation in West Cork and agreement has been reached for the purchase of an additional area of 586 acres. It is proposed to plant over 300 acres in West Cork centres in the coming season.

We have not had a tree planted this year. Are we likely to have any trees planted at all this year?

I do not know whether the Deputy heard the concluding part of the reply: "It is proposed to plant over 300 acres in West Cork centres in the coming season."
