Vol. 126 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - South Kerry Water and Sewerage.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state (1) what water and sewerage schemes are to be carried out in South Kerry by the local authority during the current financial year; (2) the order of priority of the remaining essential water and sewerage schemes for the area and within what period of time they are likely to be put into operation; (3) whether any provision is being made for the extension of existing water schemes such as is required in Kenmare and elsewhere and for the erection of pumps in districts where the residents claim such amenities because of the serious shortage of water.

The present position as regards sanitation schemes in South Kerry is as follows:—

Commencement of work on an approved water supply scheme at Cahirciveen is awaiting the delivery of materials to the contractor. Two-thirds of the contract for the water supply improvement scheme for Killarney has been completed. Suggestions for possible improvements in the revised plans submitted in respect of a sewerage scheme for Waterville have been conveyed to the local authority and their further views are awaited. Preliminary plans for Rathmore sewerage scheme have been approved.

The following further schemes, arranged in order of priority, are included in the county council's programme for South Kerry:—

Milltown water supply and sewerage; Farranfore water supply; Dungegan and Ballinskelligs water supply and Sneem sewerage. Appointments of consulting engineers to prepare preliminary plans for these schemes have been approved and submission of plans is awaited.

I am not in a position to state when the schemes referred to will be put into operation.
