Vol. 126 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Local Authorities (Works) Act.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will endeavour to secure that there will be the closest co-operation between county councils in operating schemes under the Local Authorities (Works) Act and the officials of the Department of Agriculture who are operating the land reclamation project.

In notifying the allocation of the next instalment of the grants for works under the Local Authorities (Works) Act, 1949, I propose to remind county councils and their officers that they are expected to take all necessary steps to ensure that the maximum benefits are derived from the expenditure of the grants. This will involve, amongst other things, co-operation with all other authorities and persons concerned with drainage and reclamation.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will indicate the sum of money allocated for completion of works under the Local Authorities (Works) Act in the West Cork area for the year 1951.

An interim grant of £15,000 has been allocated to the Cork County Council for the execution of works under the Local Authorities (Works) Act in the western area of the county in the current financial year. I have decided to notify the allocation of a further interim grant to county councils generally and the terms of the notification which will be largely based on the employment position in each area are being prepared.

Can the Minister give any indication what percentage he is going to notify?

The interim grant of round about the same amount as the first.

asked the Minister for Local Government if the Government intends to implement and continue the operation of the Local Authorities (Works) Act.

As indicated in my introductory and concluding speeches on the Estimates for my Department, I am prepared to consider fairly and reasonably all applications for grants for works under the Act, having due regard to the capital nature of the provision for these grants which has been made in the Estimates.
