Vol. 128 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Blarney Drainage Scheme.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that the Land Commission carried out a drainage scheme in Blarney district, County Cork, and that they are now requiring landholders in the area who did not derive any benefit from that the work who in some cases found that the work created greater flood damage, to contribute to the cost and whether he will take steps to ensure that those who have not gained anything as a result of the expenditure incurred will not be called upon to contribute.

The Land Commission carried out a scheme for the improvement of drainage in this area and created a substantial fund for the future maintenance of the works. The occupiers of the benefiting holdings are to repay part of the cost by way of annuities charged on the lands. One tenant has objected to the proposed charge on his holding and his objecttion will be heard in due course. Meanwhile the matter is sub judice.

I am not to be taken as accepting the implication in the question.

Is the Minister aware that in the case of some of the land owners who signed acceptances of this drainage scheme, they now find as soon as the scheme has finished that they do not get any benefit good, bad or indifferent, and it has only succeeded in throwing more water into their holdings?

I am not aware of that. In any case there is an objection proceeding at the moment and the Deputy will understand that I cannot enter into the merits of the matter; at least I do not think I should at the moment.
