Vol. 128 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dingle Peninsula Train Service.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that the failure of the Dingle and Tralee light railway to transport, by train, manures, fertilisers and all classes of merchandise required by residents in the Dingle Peninsula has involved the loss by these farmers of the benefit of the through train rate, and thereby caused them serious additional expense; and, if so, if he will take steps to see that the through rail rate is applied in the case of all commodities transported into the peninsula.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that the failure of the Dingle and Tralee railway to clear cattle supplies from the Dingle Peninsula has deprived the senders of the benefit of the through rail rate except on fair days, and that this has involved a loss of £3 a wagon in sending cattle from places in the peninsula to Dublin; and whether, in view of the hardship so caused, he will make representations to Córas Iompair Éireann that the through railway rate should continue to be applied in the case of all cattle transported from the peninsula.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 11 and 12 together.

Under the provisions of the Transport Act, 1950, the board of Córas Iompair Éireann is solely responsible for the charges made for transport services provided by it and I have no function in the matter. I have, however, asked Córas Iompair Éireann to consider a report furnished by the Parliamentary Secretary to the Government and representations which have been made by the Dingle Development Association in regard to the incidence of transport charges in the Dingle Peninsula with particular reference to the charges for through traffic.
