Vol. 128 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Donegal Embroidery Workers.

asked the Minister for Lands (a) if he is aware that hand-embroidery workers in West Donegal are at present finding it difficult to get work, and (b) if he will take steps to have additional supplies made available through Gaeltarra Éireann depots in the districts most affected by the shortage.

I understand that hand-embroidery workers in Donegal, who are normally employed by Northern Ireland linen houses, are not receiving their usual supply of embroidery work because of a falling off in the demand for linen-embroidered goods. The Gaeltacht Services division is also feeling the effects of the present trade situation and it is only with difficulty that it has maintained its workers in employment. Until the trade position improves, it would not be feasible for the Gaeltacht Services division to increase production by an extension of this branch of its activities.
