Vol. 128 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Importation of Foreign Goods.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in view of the slackness that is at present being experienced in the textile and clothing trade, he will consider prohibiting the importation of foreign goods.

In so far as any slackness at present being experienced in the textile and clothing trades may be attributable to the importation of foreign goods, steps to rectify the position have already been taken. In the case of textile goods subject to import quota restrictions, the quantity of goods permitted to be imported under quota has been reduced and, in the case of other goods, certain protective tariffs, which had been suspended, have been brought back into force.

The further measures which might be taken to improve the position are under examination in consultation with the interests concerned.
