Vol. 128 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fertiliser Transport Charges.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that the high transport costs charged to farmers resident in the Gaeltacht and congested districts for the delivery of fertilisers is a serious handicap to them and whether in the circumstances he will make representations to Córas Iompair Éireann to have the transport charges reduced for these areas.

I am aware that the cost of internal transport affects the prices of fertilisers, not only to farmers in the Gaeltacht but to every farmer whose land is a long distance from the factory.

I consider no useful purpose would be served by representations as suggested by the Deputy as any reduction in the transport charges to particular areas would have to be met by increasing the cost of delivery to farmers in other areas, or the cost of transport of commodities generally.

Arising out of the Minister's reply can he arrange, in respect of the superphosphate he is bringing in this year, to make it available at the same 21 ports including certain ports in Cork?

Mr. Walsh

That is another question. It has no bearing whatsoever on this.

Would that not operate to reduce the transport charges if it were made available at ports in West Cork and Kerry?

Mr. Walsh

Anything we can do to reduce transport charges will be done.

Are you going to do that? "Silence settled wide and still on the lone mountain and the mighty hill."
