Vol. 128 No. 7

Waterford (Extension of Harbour Limits) Harbour Works Order, 1951, Confirmation Bill, 1951—Second and Subsequent Stages.

I move that the Bill be now read a Second Time.

Does it not go to the Select Committee now?

By way of information let me say that the purpose of the Bill is to extend the limits of Waterford Harbour. The harbour commissioners are contemplating the possibility of some industrial development along the river. In fact, there is a factory being built there. The purpose of the extension of the harbour is to give the harbour commissioners responsibility for navigational facilities and for dredging further up the river.

I expect the Minister is aware that there has been a certain amount of dissatisfaction and discussion in Waterford arising out of the fact that ships of 9,000 tons being built by Irish Shipping Limited are considered by the Waterford Harbour authorities to be too large to enter the harbour.

Irish Shipping Limited have smaller ships. As the Deputy may be aware, they have ships of 4,500 tons and 7,500 tons which could use the harbour. They also have building or on order three smaller ships of 1,350 tons which would also be available.

Question put and agreed to.
Agreed, to take the remaining stages to-day.
Bill put through Committee without amendment, reported, received for final consideration and passed.
