Vol. 129 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Quarry Employees in County Laoighis.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that the workers employed at the quarry for Córas Iompair Eireann rail-road materials at Lisduff, County Laoighis, have conditions of service as regards pension, guarantee of employment, etc. inferior to all other employees of Córas Iompair Eireann; and, if so, whether Córas Iompair Eireann will examine this matter with a view to ensuring that these men have conditions of employment comparable with other employees of the company.

I am informed by Córas Iompair Eireann that the workers employed at Lisduff quarry are not employees of the board but of a contractor operating under a legal agreement with the board.

Is it not a fact that the board of Córas Iompair Eireann have engaged a contractor on a commission basis so that they will not be obliged to pay the rates of wages ruling for similar work in other places?

I have no information as to the motive that inspired the board to make this arrangement.

You know nothing about the contract.
