Vol. 132 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Disposal of Hand-Won Turf.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in view of the fact that existing marketing arrangements have proved totally inadequate for the disposal of the large supplies of hand-won turf which remain on the hands of producers in the Pullough, Ferbane and Edenderry areas of County Offaly, and that there is now no prospect of its disposal through ordinary commercial channels, he will make an immediate statement on the matter and indicate what further measures he proposes to take to solve the problem.

Mr. Lynch

I am not aware of any large supplies of hand-won turf remaining on the hands of producers in the areas to which the Deputy refers. My information is that all surplus turf produced in those areas in 1951 has been disposed of. As regards the 1952 crop, the production season has still only reached the half-way stage and marketing cannot be expected to get under way until the crop is harvested and ready for sale.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary make further inquiries for the purpose of finding out the tonnage of turf lying in the bogs and on the roadside in the Ferbane area of County Offaly?

Mr. Lynch

I will make these inquiries but the information is that there is none.

The information is in your Department.
