Vol. 135 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment on Erne Drainage Scheme.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware, further to his reply to a question on 30th October, 1952, that Donegal residents living along the Fermanagh border are still being refused permits to enable them to take up employment on the Erne drainage scheme convenient to their homes; and if, in the circumstances, he will request the Electricity Supply Board to make the necessary representations to the contractors with a view to having these people accorded special consideration for employment on the scheme.

I am informed by the Electricity Supply Board that the engineering firms who are engaged on the drainage scheme in County Fermanagh do not hold contracts from the board. In the circumstances I do not feel that any useful purpose would be served by the adoption of the Deputy's suggestion.

Mr. Brennan

Is the Minister aware that recruitment of workers for the scheme in question must be carried out through the labour exchanges in the Six Counties and that will in itself debar residents of this State along the Border from getting employment on the scheme? Is the Minister aware, furthermore, that workers in the Six Counties secured employment on the Erne hydro-electric scheme even to the exclusion of our own unemployed on this side of the Border? In view of these facts, would he not consider making representations to ensure that residents along the Border in this State will get a fair share of the employment for which we are supplying two-thirds of the money?

That is a separate question.
